Mr Joseph Lawrence Tobias , took over the charge as Chairman, Bangiya Gramin Vikash Bank

Mr Joseph Lawrence Tobias  - Chairman  of  Bangiya Gramin Vikash Mr Joseph Lawrence Tobias has been in the banking profession spanning over 30 long years starting from 1987 when he joined United Bank of India as a Probationary Officer. He is a post graduate in Commerce, CAIIB & Executive MBA. He has undergone a training program in Marketing from IIM, Kolkata and also completed a virtual program in Strategic Management from IIM, Rohtak.

During his service career he has wide exposure in different facets of banking- Rural Banking, International Banking, Treasury Operations, Cash Management Services, IT implementation, Retail Banking & Marketing. He is complimented for setting up a new Regional Office in Hyderabad in 2016 catering to two states & under his leadership as DGM & CRM the region was one of the best performing regions in erstwhile United Bank of India. He has worked in rural, semi-urban, urban and metro locations. He has served in Jorhat & Guwahati (Assam), Kolkata, 24 Parganas (South) & Purulia in West Bengal, Mumbai and Hyderabad. His working experience is gathered from across branches, regional offices, hubs and head office. Before joining as Chairman of BGVB on 26th May 2020, he was General Manager heading MSME & Financial Inclusion in erstwhile United Bank of India.

He does realise the vital role of rural banks in the development of rural economy and its key responsibility in rural institutional financing by taking banking services to the doorstep of rural masses, mobilising rural savings, identifying their financial needs, enabling implementation of Govt schemes, increasing the level of penetration of banking services to unserved and underserved areas.

He believes the strategic pillars of the financial inclusion strategy should embrace providing basic bouquet of financial products, financial literacy and education, customer protection and prompt grievance redressal. The FI strategy should aim for sustainable financial inclusion by leveraging technology and through collaborations with fintech & Corporate Business Correspondents.

He is committed to taking BGVB to greater heights despite the challenges the bank is currently facing. He quotes "when you face difficult times, know that challenges are not sent to destroy you.
